Among our scriptures the 'Shrimad Bhagwad Puran' is an authentic text of the Hindu dharma. This 'puran' tells us the reason behind the meaning and the practice of Navratri. The nine days of fasting, prayer and abstinence that most of the Hindus practise during the months of Chaitra (March-April) and Ashwini (October-November) are called the Navratri. 'Nav' menas nine and 'Ratri' means nights. The prayers and penance offered during the Navratri are hence named Navratri Vrat Katha. |
